The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has encouraged residents of Vihiga County to plant more trees to increase land under forest cover and protect existing water catchment areas.

NSSF Vihiga County, Branch Manager, Mrs. Esther Kemei, made the appeal when she led students and staff of Lusengeli Secondary School in Sabatia Sub-County in a tree planting exercise on Saturday.

Addressing the students and staff, Kemei disclosed NSSF had embarked on tree planting exercise in selected parts of the country as part of the organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

“As part of our CSR in this rainy season, NSSF Board of Trustee decided to buttress President Kenyatta’s agenda by distributing tree seedlings to various parts in the country, “said Kemei.
She underscored importance of the forestry sector in enhancing the country’s economic growth and development.

“It goes without saying that trees are not just sources of livelihood, but most important key drivers to any growing economy the world over thus the President’s rallying call, Panda Miti Penda Kenya,” she added.

A total of 500 tree seedlings were planted by the students on the institution’s compound.

Vihiga County Commissioner (CC), Mr. John Chelimo was the chief guest.

Speaking to members of the press on sidelines of the exercise, Kemei promised that the organisation would conduct similar exercise in several schools within the county.
