Makueni County opened the Kenya Youth Intercounty games with a 2-1 thrashing of Kwale County in men’s football at Unoa grounds Wote, Makueni County.
Striker Clinton Mwololo gave the home team a resounding lead after netting in the first minute of kickoff in the only day’s match.
By halftime, however, the score was level at 1-1 after Mbwana Bwia scored for Kwale County in the 7th minute.
Makueni made it 2-1 at the stroke of stoppage time through Shadrack Kasungu to win all crucial three points as the 4th edition of the Kenya Youth Intercounty Sports games picks steam.
At least 23 counties have registered their presence in Makueni out of 35 that had confirmed participation in the annual tournament.
The week-long event which features football and volleyball games for post seconary school youths aged 18-25 years concludes on Sunday 22nd April.
Deputy Governor Adelina Mwau who opened the games said the tournament is meant to accord out-of-school youths an opportunity to showcase their talents, and link them to possible recruiters in elite clubs.
Kenya National Volleyball technical director David Lung’aho said the event will help in scouting for fresh talents for the national volleyball team and other national clubs, adding that several coaches would troupe to Makueni to scout for such talents.
