Kitui County: April 10, 2018: By Philip Muteti
ONE of Kenya’s top Bulk grain buyers today opened negotiations with Kitui Governor Kaluki Ngilu over the buying of green gram, giving a shot in the arm to The Ndengu Revolution.
Speaking today at the Governors’ office, Mr. Ali Balala, the General Manager of One Commodity Group Limited, a bulk grain handler based in Mombasa said he is happy to be part of the life changing Ndengu farming in the county.
The businessman told Governor Ngilu that his firm has the capacity to buy all the green grams from the county directly without involving middle men who for a long time have oppressed farmers and benefited from the farmers farm produce.
On the other hand, Governor Ngilu welcomed the trader saying that her plan is to attain food security and find a reliable source of livelihood for her people. She said her government has deliberately supported farmers and a huge harvest of over 50 m kilograms of green grams is expected owing to the promising on going rains.
Mrs. Ngilu added that her government will provide pesticides and hold barazas to educate farmers on the best ways of crop husbandry to enhance the quality of the crop.
The Governor said harvesting, handling and marketing are crucial to the Ndengu Revolution hence the reason she has put enough resources to ensure Ndengu farmers reap maximum benefit from their produce. She also assured her people that she is looking for market of other pulses grown grains such as Pigeon Peas(Nzuu) and Cow Peas (Nzooko)
