Kiteei primary school – Makueni: 29.3.2018 – By Jane Mason.

School going girls in Kiteei primary school in Mbuvo, Makueni have reasons to smile after the ” Keeping Girls in school, Ending the Period of Shame” initiative, which I spearhead, received a boost of sanitary towels from African Cotton Industries Limited.

The girls will not have to worry on what to use or absent themselves from school during the menstruation period for through the donation are covered for a whole year.

The initiative which I launched in 2014 has helped to achieve the broader goal of improved school attendance among girls, see more girls complete schools and ensure enhanced academic performance.

According to the head teacher , Kiteei primary school, Mr.Kaleli, the girls’ performance is far much better than the boys’ and challenged us to think of a program to empower the boy child, who if not catered for will be left far much behind.

The government of Makueni county in partnership with Shina Foundation has, this year , set aside KES. 5 million for the program which is targeting to benefit 6,000 girls across the county, bringing to 13,000 the total number of girls who have benefitted from the program since its inception.
