Athi River residents at Mto Wa Mawe bridge on Friday spend the whole day waiting for the body of a Machakos man who drowned in Mto wa Mawe, Athi River after he slipt while vandalising scrape metal under the bridge bridge.
Mavoko assistant county commissioner Patricia Nthiwa said the man only identified as Francis, 23, drowned at the bridge that was under construction.
The body had not been retrieved from the river by the time the report got to our news desk.
“It is suspected that the body has been moved downstream given that the river is swollen due to recently experienced heavy downpour and floods,” Nthiwa said.
She said local divers were searching the body.
Madam Nthiwa urged the residents living along rivers to move from danger zones to high grounds for safety, especially this time we are experiencing heavy rains.
Last week, part of the bridge was destroyed by heavy rains that led to the closure of the busy Mombasa Nairobi highway for over 10 hours.
The flooded river also caused massive destruction at the nearby green park estate.
KeNHA and Chinese engineers had been working on the bridge for several months now since the construction of dual carriageway between Athi River’s interchange and Machakos turn over began last year.
